Como vive-se a quarentena no Brasil?

O isolamento social no Brasil não é uma regra é um privilégio, faz quem pode e não quem quer, diz-se por aqui, que estamos em um auto isolamento por escolha. O governo brasileiro não fez da quarentena algo necessário ou essencial, ao contrário, o Presidente eleito faz apologias a quebra das medidas de saúde sugeridas pelas organizações mundiais especialistas no tema, ridiculariza o afastamento físico, e faz chacotas públicas como “é só uma gripezinha” e “e daí”para referir-se a pandemia que assola o mundo.O cenário político, social e sanitário no país é o mais cruel desde o período da ditadura militar na década de 70. Presenciamos dentro de nossas casas através dos noticiários transmitidos pela televisão e internet a queda do nosso sistema democrático, escândalos envol- vendo o chefe de estado e seus familiares, ministros pedindo exoneração de seus cargos, Juízes sendo desrespeitados por alcunhas de baixo calão proferidas por membros do governo, imprensa perseguida e vetada por tentar exercer seu papel, neste cenário de caos encontro-me em uma cidade de médio porte do Brasil, Belém na Amazônia, com milha- res de mortos pelo Covid-19, as autoridades locais envolvidas em escandalos de corrupção, o sistema de saúde e funerário estadual colapsado.De dentro da minha ilha de previlégio observo a tudo isso impotente, a angustia por não saber o que o futuro reserva é uma constante, a espera eterna, e a vida como conhecíamos antes virou uma utopia. A série fotográ ca a seguir retrata um pouco do dia-a-dia da casa de uma família de classe média no Brasil em 2020 durante os meses de auto isolamento devido a pandemia mundial do Covid-19.

Bio

Artista e produtora audiovisual paraense, graduada em comunicação pela Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP) em São Paulo, Brasil, em 2015. Iniciei minha carreira a partir da documentação de foto e video.

Em 2013 tive o meu primeiro contacto com fotogra a pro ssional através de um estágio realizado no festival de fotogra a Paraty em Foco (RJ-BR) após esta experiencia, atuei como produtora em programas brasileiros de televisão. Os primeiros projetos autorais começaram após viver em Londres em 2016 onde estudei cinema documental na Met Film School, finalizei meu curso com um mini documentário sobre uma mãe libanesa chamado Learning to Fly, ao regressar ao Brasil fiz um curso na associação Fotoativa, com tutoria da artista visual Ana Lira, que mudou minha visão sobre produção artística e formas de produzir um objeto de arte. Finalizamos este curso com uma mostra coletiva de processos de criação na associação, onde trabalhei a memória afetiva a partir de uma série fotográfica e instalação com tijolos sobre o mais antigo armazém ainda em funcionamento de minha cidade natal, a Casa Salomão.

Em 2017, ingressei no mestrado em Arte Design para o espaço público na faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto e durante o curso desenvolvi o projeto Em tradução, narrativas entre os dois lados do atlântico, que consiste em uma pesquisa fotográfica sobre o espaço público de cidades homônimas entre Brasil e Portugal. As similaridades e dissonâncias assimiladas neste projeto foram apresentadas através da construção de um fotolivro onde a experiência narrativa convida o observador a imergir no imaginário de seis cidades, Óbidos, Santarém e Salvaterra, tanto do Brasil como em Portugal, e perder-se entre elas sem saber em que país está, convidando a refletir sobre a experiência proporcionada pela observação do espaço público e também sobre o passado e o presente.

Além do fotolivro, participei de uma mostra coletiva dos finalistas do mestrado em Arte e Design para o espaço público (2017/2019) na galeria da faculdade de Belas Artes da U.Porto, onde apresentei o mesmo projeto através de fotografias, serigrafia em tecido e uma pequena instalação. Em 2020 participei de uma mostra individual para novos artistas promovida pelo Canto Coworking (Belém/PA-BR) com o mesmo projeto. Temas como memória, colonialismo, uxos urbanos e mapas geográficos os quais são frequentemente abordados em meus projetos.

How one lives during quarantine in Brazil?

The social isolation in Brazil is not a rule, it is a privilege. Unfortunately because not everyone has the same social conditions, self isolation is not taken as serious. The Brazilian government has not made quarantine an essential, actually the President elected create excuses about breaking health measures, suggested by the World Helth Organization, and mocks social isolation together with the pandemic e ects in the world. Excuses such as “it’s just a little flu” and “so what?” are used by the President when referring to the pandemic.e social-political and health scenario in the country is the most cruel since the period of the military dictatorship in the 70s. From home we have been experiencing the fall of our democratic system simply by keeping up with the news. Scandals such as ministers asking for resignation, judges being disrespected by members of the government, the head of state being involveld in nepotism, press being persecuted, and so on.In such a chaotic situation I find myself in a relatively medium- -sized city located in Amazon, Belém. The city has been negatively a ected in many ways, reported with thousands of deaths due to Covid-19, local authorities involved in corruption scandals and the health and funeral state systems collapsed. From the inside of my “privilege island” I observe all this helplessly, the agony of not knowing what the future holds is a constant, and the wait is timeless, life as we knew it, now became an utopia.e following photographic series portrays a little bit of a middle class family daily life in Brazil, who has the privilege to properly exercise self-isolation due to Covid-19 world pandemic.

Bio

Female artist and producer from Pará, who graduated in medias and communication at Fundação Armando Alvares Penteado (FAAP), São Paulo Brazil, in 2015. I started my career with photo and video documentation.

In 2013 I had my first contact with professional photography through an inter- nship at the International Photography Festival Paraty em Foco (RJ-BR) a er this experience, I’ve worked as a television producer in Brazil. My first authorial art project initiated when I was living in London in 2016 where I studied documentary lmmaking at the Met Film School, I nished my course with a short documentary about a Lebanese mother, the Learning to Fly, when I returned to Brazil I took a workshop at the Fotoativa association (PA-BR), with the visual artist as a tutor Ana Lira, who changed my perspective as an artist in many ways, the tools of producing an art object had expanded. We ended this course with a collective exhi- bition of the students creative processes in the association, my result was a project about a ective memory by a photographic series and an installation about the oldest warehouse still in operation in my hometown, Casa Salomão.

In 2017, I joined at a Master in Art and Design for the public space at Porto Fine Art faculty, during the course I developed the project In translation, narratives between the two sides of the Atlantic, which consists in a photographic research about public space by the analysis of homonymous cities between Brazil and Portugal. The similarities and dissonances assimilated in this project were presented through the construction of a photobook which the narrative invites the observer to immerse himself in the imaginary of these six cities, Óbidos, Santarém and Salvaterra, both in Brazil and Portugal, and to get lost among them without knowing in which country they are by the observation of the images, inviting to re ect on these experience by the observation of public space and also on the past and the present.

In addition to the photobook, I’ve participated in a collective exhibition of the finalists on the Master degree in Art and Design for the public space (2017/2019) on the Fine Arts faculty gallery of the U.Porto, where I presented the same project by photographs, screen printing on fabric and a small installation. In 2020 I participated of an individual exhibition for new artists promoted by Canto Co-working (Belém / PA-BR) with the same project. Themes such as memory, colonialism, urban flows and geographic maps are frequently addressed in my projects.

"Zona de Respiração" inicialmente, partiu de uma curiosidade: a maneira em que a minha namorada e eu ocupávamos nosso apartamento de um quarto. Este trabalho explora o conceito de distanciamento social em relação à situação actual. Fiquei comovido com a regra de 3 a 6 pés, que afirma que se eu ficar a uma distância de 3 a 6 pés de alguém, essa pessoa pode inspirar um pouco do que exalo. A regra fez-me pensar no espaço em que habitamos como uma bolha. Uma bolha usada como uma medida de cautela em ambientes públicos e como ela pode ser subconscientemente transportada para um espaço doméstico privado. A prática do distanciamento social como uma necessidade em espaços públicos e privados. A falta de troca entre pessoas forçada pela possibilidade de inalar parte do que exalo.

Nascido em Ostia Antica, Roma, Gionatan Tecle é um artista visual de origem eritreia que mora em Los Angeles. O seu trabalho explora os limites dentro dos quais uma imagem pode evocar emoções e, ao mesmo tempo, afirmar o seu sentido dentro do material em que ela é apresentada. Os seus métodos intelectuais de criar uma imagem procuram explorar o conteúdo e desenterrar uma expressão cinematográfica incorporada nas palavras escritas

Os seus últimos trabalhos, Fixed Water and World foram recentemente escolhidos para a selecção oficial do Palm Springs International Film Festival. Ele recebeu vários prémios por mérito artístico, incluindo a bolsa Myrl Schreibman, o Motion Picture Association American Award e a bolsa Steve Lawrence and Eddie Gorme.

Em 2012, ele completou o seu BFA em Arte Cinematográfica da University of Maryland Baltimore County. Ele também tem um mestrado em Cinematografia da UCLA School of Theater, Film & Television.

“Breathing Zone” Initially started from a curiosity into the way in which my partner and I occupied our one-bedroom apartment, this body of work explores the idea of social distancing amidst today's situation. I was moved by the 3 to 6 feet rule which states that if I stand within 3 to 6 feet of someone, you may inhale some of what I exhale. The rule made me think of the space we inhabit as a bubble that is used as a measure of caution in public settings and how this thought is and can be subconsciously carried in a private domestic space. The practice of distancing as a necessity in both private and public spaces. The lack of exchange between people forced by the possibility of inhaling some of what I exhale.

Bio

Born in Ostia Antica, Rome, Gionatan Tecle is an Italian Eritrean visual artist currently based in Los Angeles. His work explores the limits in which an image can evoke emotion while asserting it's sense seamlessly within the material being presented. His cerebral methods of creating an image involve exploring the content and unearthing a cinematic expression embedded within the written words.

His latest works, Fixed Water and World were recently chosen for Official Selection at Palm Springs International Film Festival. He has received several awards for artistic merit including the Myrl Schreibman Fellowship, Motion Picture Association American Award, and the Steve Lawrence and Eddie Gorme Scholarship.

In 2012, he completed his BFA from the University of Maryland Baltimore County undergraduate program in Cinematic Art. He also holds a Master in Fine Arts from UCLA’s School of Theater, Film & Television in Cinematography.

I am an artist based in Sussex, UK - during Lockdown in the UK, I cared for my 89 year old Grandmother who has Vascular Dementia. For the first 40 days, I documented her daily life throughout being isolated in my home.

Bio

In her practice the artist Amber Franks investigates personal trauma and loss in relation to “casual” sexism and its causes and contexts.Her work poses challenging questions that push and question conventional boundaries between artist and viewer. Franks considers the spectators’ space and progression within her exhibits, devising a narrative that invokes the viewer to reflect upon the self. This consideration exemplifies how various experiences of trauma can be dissected into separate narratives, but inherently still coincide with one another.

With the adequate social distancing being safeguarded by the organizing committee of the presentation, OLIM was presented before a substancial audience with interventions by director of Casa da Arquitectura, Arq. Nuno Sampaio, the author Camilo Rebelo, the editor Pedro Leão Neto and the designer Né Santelmo. After the presentation, a Q&A session took place.

A Time For Us

This series is the first stretch of an investigation into the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on relationships, both amongst the households it seeks to document, as well as between the photographer and subject. During a time of unprecedented uncertainty, our relationships with others are more important than ever to sustain mental health
and well-being. Yet social distancing measures challenges these relationships, forcing to seek new ways to connect with those around us.
Through cycling and documenting the experience through photography, this series seeks to enact a process of self-care through maintaining physical and mental well-being and sustaining relationships with my community. The first images of this series capture transient, socially distanced interactions found on doorsteps and the rooftops of apartment buildings, or in local parks. Many of the subjects are forced to live in small, crowded rented spaces in South London without access to gardens. The images point to the pressure this can place on relationships in households, and the impact on mental health and well-being. Those with gardens and private spaces do not appear.
As an artist, I felt obliged to develop my intimate angle and perception of this revolutionary time that will define our lives for the decades to come.
Yet I strived not to join the wave of poignant narratives focusing on the dramatic aspects of this pandemic, but looking at what surrounded me and questioning how the people were coping through this unique moment.

My work reflects on the notions of identity and place.
Through a continuous research on youth and underrepresented communities I have explored the nexus between identity and place and how are these reflecting the narrative of our time. I look at my work with the idea of what it will mean in a future era.
In this post-dated perspective everything becomes relevant, attitude, fashion, architecture and the landscape the subjects inhabit.
My areas of interest have been mainly the Mediterranean, where I come from, and the UK, where I currently live, and I’m fascinated by the contrasting and common traits between these two cultures. The documentary aesthetic of my work has informed my commercial work, making it my distinctive look to bring out a raw and personal angle from the subjects and matters I portray.

A Casa da Arquitectura promove o lançamento do livro OLIM, da autoria de Camilo Rebelo, publicado pela scopio Editions, editora independente com um enfoque na área da fotografia contemporânea relacionada com o mundo da arquitectura e coordenada pelo grupo de investigação Arquitectura, Arte e Imagem  (AAI) do Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura e Urbanismo (CEAU - FAUP).

O lançamento acontece às 15h00 e a abertura da mesa estará a cargo do arquitecto Nuno Sampaio que fará uma breve apresentação do livro OLIM, seguindo-se uma conversa entre o autor arquitecto Camilo Rebelo e o editor arquitecto Pedro Leão Neto e a designer Né Santelmo que irão encetar um diálogo sobre a experiência e o processo de criação do livro onde se procurou explorar o potencial específico deste suporte físico como meio único de comunicação da vida e obra de um autor. 

OLIM corresponde a uma reflexão pessoal que Camilo Rebelo desenvolve sobre a sua experiência de vida e trabalho. Este livro é uma narrativa não linear, onde a memória, identidade e lugares se interrelacionam de forma rizomática através de diversas histórias da vida pessoal e profissional do autor. O livro interpela os leitores a procurar um significado nos fragmentos de viagens e projetos que nos mostra através de imagens combinadas com diversos pensamentos criando um discurso visual onde há lugar para a coerência, mas também para o paradoxo e brincadeira, o oximoro. OLIM é assim em tudo diferente de um livro tradicional, como se pode subentender pelas palavras de Eduardo Souto de Moura quando diz que "... não é bem um livro, mas talvez um ficheiro, e é por isso que se chama “Fichas”, tal como Wittgenstein colocou numa caixa cerca de 700 fragmentos, que não ficaram “guardados para sempre, mas trabalhados, alterados e aperfeiçoados, enquanto recortes."

1. a doutrina em que tudo na natureza tem uma base orgânica ou faz parte de um todo orgânico.
2. o uso ou defesa de formas literárias ou artísticas nas quais as partes estão conectadas ou coordenadas no todo.
No entanto, o Organicismo na fotografia com técnica de bordado são conexões sobre essa organicidade entre fotografia e a técnica do bordado.

Bio
Marta Dias nasceu a 27 de setembro de 1988, em Lisboa. Oriunda de uma família albicastrense, cedo demonstrou interesse pelas artes visuais, motivada pelos diversos tios e primos com apetência para as artes plásticas.

Concluiu o curso de Arquitetura em Lisboa com a tese final de curso, Paisagem Urbana e Ribeirinha – Estudo da Praça do Comércio através do olhar fotográfico onde frequentou diversos cursos no Instituto Português de Fotografia; apresentada em 2014, foi classificada por muitos como “atrevida”, mas conseguindo aliar os seus conhecimentos de arquitetura ao gosto pela fotografia.

Fez estágio de arquitectura em Utrecht, Holanda e participou em várias exposições incluindo exposições a solo sobre a viagem humanitária que fez em 2015.

Nos últimos dois anos encontra-se em Copenhaga, Dinamarca à procura de novas oportunidades e descobertas.

Since March 13th, the Danish government has introduced lockdown measures.

"Stay at home - Portuguese in Copenhagen" is a small view of the Portuguese community in Copenhagen where life outside the home has ceased.

They are Portuguese who live alone or with their family.

They are Portuguese who came (for now) only to study or who have lived for many years and established their roots here.

The brief minutes for the "portrait at the door" tries to contrast with the long weeks of a uncertain time with the "saudade" and the Portuguese's smiles that will always be present.

Bio

Marta Dias was born on September 27, 1988, in Lisbon. Coming from an “albicastrense” family, she soon showed interest in the visual arts, motivated by several uncles and cousins with competence for plastic arts.

She completed the Architecture master degree in Lisbon with the final thesis of the course, Urban and Riverside Landscape - Study of Praça do Comércio through the photographic view where she attended several courses at the Instituto Português de Fotografia; presented in 2014, it was classified by many as “bold”, but managing to combine its knowledge of architecture with the taste for photography.

She did an architecture internship in Utrecht, The Netherlands and participated in several exhibitions including solo exhibitions on his humanitarian trip in 2015.

For the past two years, she has been in Copenhagen, Denmark looking for new opportunities and discoveries.

"Stay at home - Portuguese in Copenhagen" é uma pequena visão da comunidade portuguesa em Copenhaga onde a vida fora de casa parou.

São portugueses que moram sozinhos ou com a família.

São portugueses que vieram (por enquanto) apenas para estudar ou que viveram por muitos anos e estabeleceram suas raízes aqui.

Os breves minutos para o "retrato à porta" tentam contrastar com as longas semanas do tempo incerto com a saudade e o sorriso dos portugueses sempre presentes.

Fevereiro 2020.

Mudei-me para Itália para estagiar num estúdio de design. Passadas quatro semanas, o país entra em lockdown.

As viagens resumem-se agora à ida à cozinha, à casa de banho, ou em raras e fantásticas ocasiões, ao supermercado. O turismo está confinado a um lugar muito específico que é onde vivo, propondo novas formas de o observar. As trivialidades do mundo exterior estão em pausa; torna-se necessário encontrar novas banalidades cá dentro como forma de escapar ao cataclismo que paira no ar.

Dou por mim a observar e a documentar as pequenas mudanças num ambiente imutável. A forma como a luz do sol afecta os objectos do quotidiano, tornando visíveis os paralelos entre aquilo que é público e privado. As cenas domésticas aparecem cuidadosamente orquestradas, onde o objecto se torna o sujeito (refém às alterações na luminosidade). Lá fora, a malha urbana é reajustada—os ângulos incisivos das sombras dos edifícios vizinhos são ponteiros que marcam a hora do dia (um pouco como os relógios solares nas fachadas das piazzi que visitei antes de tudo ir por água abaixo).

Na ausência de estímulos exteriores, aprendo a encontrá-los à minha volta, ficando mais sincronizado com as mudanças físicas aparentes. O tempo deixa a sua marca naquilo que é mundano e efémero—a comida que apodrece ou a água que seca. Uma forma de regulação do tempo que denota uma viagem através do quotidiano. O factor humano é substituído pelo inanimado e, no entanto, estas imagens contam uma história reconfortante que fazem da quarentena um destino aprazível e desejável.

Estas imagens são souvenirs de uma viagem que nunca pretendi fazer, na qual o destino se tornou o mesmo que o ponto de partida.

Miguel Santos licenciou-se em Design de Comunicação pela Faculdade de Belas Artes da Universidade do Porto (2019). Frequentou a Willem de Kooning Academie em Roterdão, como bolseiro Erasmus+. Tem um FdA em Interior Design da London College of Communication (2009-2011). Estagiou no Museu da FBAUP (2019). Trabalhou no estúdio de marketing e comunicação Grow Creativity, nos departamentos de design e produção.

Atualmente encontra-se a estagiar no Studio Blanco em Itália, onde está envolvido em projectos de cariz comercial e cultural, sendo que o design e a fotografia surgem como disciplinas transversais a toda a prática do estúdio.

February 2020.

I moved to Italy to attend an internship at a design studio. 4 weeks in, the country goes into lockdown.

Exploring trips I had planned on taking around the country now come down to the odd trip to the kitchen, bathroom, and on unexpectedly rare and magical occasions—to venture out to the supermarket. Sightseeing has been redirected to a very specific enclosed area, unveiling new ways to perceive it. Trivialities of the outside world are on standby; new ones are found indoors, as a possible escape from the cataclysm looming over us.

I find myself taking notice of subtle changes in uneventful spaces. Light falls on everyday objects and its surroundings, unveiling parallels between the public and private domains. Domestic scenes look almost carefully orchestrated, where object becomes subject (to the changes in light). Outside, the neighbouring axis is repurposed—buildings’ shadows, with moving sharp angles, are now indicators of the time of the day (a bit like the sundials in the façades of the piazzi I visited before shit hit the fan).

I become more in sync with the physical changes around me. In the absence of outside stimuli, I learn to find them in the immediate space around me. Time leaves its mark on the mundane and ephemeral—food rots, water dries. A form of time regulation denoting a journey through the everyday. The human factor is replaced with the inanimate, yet these images tell a story of warmth, and make quarantine a nice and desirable destination.

These images are souvenirs of a trip I did not intend on taking, in which destination became the same as the point of departure.

Miguel Santos holds a degree in Communication Design from Faculty of Fine Arts, University of Porto. (2019) Participated in an exchange student programme at Willem de Kooning Academie (Rotterdam). He has an FdA in Interior Design from the London College of Communication (2009- 2011). Has interned at the faculty’s museum. Collaborated on a freelance level with creative and marketing studio Grow Creativity (Porto), in the design and production department. At the moment, he is interning at Studio Blanco in Italy, where he is involved in both commercial and cultural projects.

Discovery Awards 2020
Os Encontros da Imagem - Festival Internacional de Fotografia e Artes Visuais, tiveram o prazer de convidar artistas que trabalham com o medium fotográfico e outras expressões visuais (vídeo, instalações, etc.), para submeterem os seus trabalhos enquadrados no tema "Genesis" ao prémio Discovery Awards 2020. Tendo em atenção o sucesso das edições anteriores, o festival organizou novamente o prémio, reiterando desta forma a vontade de mostrar o trabalho de novos talentos, promovendo assim novos artistas emergentes com base na excelente qualidade dos seus trabalhos.

Este ano foram rececionadas 259 candidaturas de 37 países diferentes, de entre os quais foram selecionados os 14 finalistas dos Discovery Awards 2020, que terão exposições nos Encontros da Imagem - Festival Internacional de Fotografia e Artes Visuais de 11 de Setembro a 31 de Outubro 2020 em Braga, Portugal.
