KOL

by Alexander Binder

What excites me is to use the medium of photography to explore the otherworldly and surreal. I'm not interested in conceptual work or depicting a specific situation, but in emotions and the often dreamlike quality of our memories.

By using optical toys, self-made lenses and vintage camera objectives I am trying to switch off the analytical part of the mind and create a situation that brings these abstract ideas to life.

Like inkblot images, the photographs initially have no narrative. Only through experiences and emotions does a finely branched interplay develop. And thus a personal reading - as it hopefully also arises individually within each viewer of my photography. There is no rational »understanding« for my photo series. The photographs should be felt rather than understood.

Bio

Alexander, who cites the art of French symbolist Odilon Redon and the aesthetics of the 60s progressive rock movement as inspiration, merges digital and analog photography by combining modern SLR cameras with old and self-made lenses.

His photographs are characterized by blurs, aperture spots, vibrant colors and random reflections. In this way, his works escape the high-tech world of modern camera systems and smartphones that strive for perfection.

He currently lives, works and meditates in Southwest Germany.
