Octaetéride Award Distinguishes Cityscopio Cultural Association and the scopio Editions and Scopio Network Projects

The Cityscopio Cultural Association was distinguished at the closing event of the 8th anniversary of Casa Comum on April 18, 2026, with the Octaetéride Award, through the scopio Editions project and the Scopio Network platform, as an expression of public recognition for the partnership developed over the past years and for the significant contribution to the affirmation of the cultural intervention project of the University of Porto.

The distinction, granted by Casa Comum – University of Porto, underlines the role played by the Cityscopio Cultural Association in building a democratic, plural and open cultural space for the community, through editorial, scientific and cultural initiatives focused on the relationship between architecture, art, image, photography and contemporary thought.

Throughout this journey, the collaboration between Cityscopio, Casa Comum, the University of Porto, and U.Porto Press has materialized in a significant set of editorial and curatorial projects of national and international scope, promoting the intersection between academic research, artistic creation, and cultural dissemination.

Among the most relevant projects is ARCHITECTURE, ART AND IMAGE – UTOPIA, developed in conjunction with U.Porto Press, bringing together interdisciplinary contributions around the relationships between architecture, art, image, and contemporary utopian thought. The publication establishes itself as a space for critical reflection on the modes of representation, perception, and cultural construction of space.

This editorial work also resulted in the launch of the Architecture, Art and Utopia – U.PORTO Alumni Little Books collection, developed by U.Porto Press in partnership with scopio Editions. The collection proposes an accessible and interdisciplinary format dedicated to the dissemination of essays, reflections, and experiences related to architecture, visual culture, and contemporary artistic practices.

Another structuring project of this collaboration has been the CONTRAST editorial series, regularly presented at Casa Comum through public sessions, launches, and roundtables. The project brings together images and critical texts on photography, higher education, and academic research, involving various Portuguese institutions and schools, establishing itself as a platform for debate around contemporary image and photographic practices in the university context.

In the scientific and academic field, the international journal scopio Architecture, Art and Image also deserves mention. This annual open-access, peer-reviewed publication is edited by the Centre for Architecture and Urbanism Studies (CEAU/FAUP), in collaboration with ID+ and CETAPS, with joint endorsement from U.Porto Press and scopio Editions.

The journal is now an international reference in the interdisciplinary intersection between architecture, art, and image, promoting critical research and contemporary reflection through multiple theoretical, artistic, and curatorial perspectives. Structured around annual themes, the publication seeks to stimulate debate on the cultural, spatial, and visual challenges of contemporary life, bringing together researchers, artists, architects, and diverse audiences.

The recognition now granted by the Octaetéride – Casa Comum Award reinforces the cultural and academic impact of the work developed by the Cityscopio Cultural Association, as well as the relevance of its editorial and research platforms in the context of contemporary cultural production.

More than an institutional distinction, this award represents the recognition of a trajectory marked by the creation of spaces for dialogue, critical thinking, and interdisciplinary collaboration, contributing to broadening the relationship between university, culture, and civil society.

A Associação Cultural Cityscopio foi distinguida no evento de fecho do 8.º aniversário da Casa Comum no dia 18 de abril de 2026 com o Prémio Octaetéride – Casa Comum, através do projeto scopio Editions e da plataforma Scopio Network, como expressão de reconhecimento público pela parceria desenvolvida ao longo dos últimos anos e pelo contributo relevante para a afirmação do projeto de intervenção cultural da Universidade do Porto.

A distinção, atribuída pela Casa Comum – Universidade do Porto, sublinha o papel desempenhado pela Associação Cultural Cityscopio na construção de um espaço cultural democrático, plural e aberto à comunidade, através de iniciativas editoriais, científicas e culturais centradas na relação entre arquitetura, arte, imagem, fotografia e pensamento contemporâneo.

Ao longo deste percurso, a colaboração entre a Cityscopio, a Casa Comum, a Universidade do Porto e a U.Porto Press materializou-se num conjunto significativo de projetos editoriais e curatoriais de âmbito nacional e internacional, promovendo o cruzamento entre investigação académica, criação artística e divulgação cultural.

Entre os projetos mais relevantes destaca-se ARCHITECTURE, ART AND IMAGE – UTOPIA, desenvolvido em articulação com a U.Porto Press, reunindo contributos interdisciplinares em torno das relações entre arquitetura, arte, imagem e pensamento utópico contemporâneo. A publicação afirma-se como um espaço de reflexão crítica sobre os modos de representação, perceção e construção cultural do espaço.

Deste trabalho editorial resultou igualmente o lançamento da coleção Arquitetura, Arte e Utopia – U.PORTO Alumni Little Books, desenvolvida pela U.Porto Press em parceria com a scopio Editions. A coleção propõe um formato acessível e interdisciplinar dedicado à divulgação de ensaios, reflexões e experiências ligadas à arquitetura, à cultura visual e às práticas artísticas contemporâneas.

Outro dos projetos estruturantes desta colaboração tem sido a série editorial CONTRAST, apresentada regularmente na Casa Comum através de sessões públicas, lançamentos e mesas-redondas. O projeto reúne imagens e textos críticos sobre fotografia, ensino superior e investigação académica, envolvendo diversas instituições e escolas portuguesas, afirmando-se como uma plataforma de debate em torno da imagem contemporânea e das práticas fotográficas no contexto universitário.

No campo científico e académico, merece ainda destaque a revista internacional scopio Architecture, Art and Image, publicação anual de acesso aberto e revisão científica por pares, editada pelo Centro de Estudos de Arquitectura e Urbanismo (CEAU/FAUP), em colaboração com o ID+ e o CETAPS, com chancela conjunta da U.Porto Press e da scopio Editions.

A revista constitui hoje uma referência internacional no cruzamento interdisciplinar entre arquitetura, arte e imagem, promovendo investigação crítica e reflexão contemporânea através de múltiplas perspetivas teóricas, artísticas e curatoriais. O reconhecimento agora atribuído pelo Prémio Octaetéride – Casa Comum reforça o impacto cultural e académico do trabalho desenvolvido pela Associação Cultural Cityscopio, bem como a relevância das suas plataformas editoriais e de investigação no contexto da produção cultural contemporânea.

Mais do que uma distinção institucional, este prémio representa o reconhecimento de um percurso marcado pela criação de espaços de diálogo, pensamento crítico e colaboração interdisciplinar, contribuindo para ampliar a relação entre universidade, cultura e sociedade civil.

On 11 December, the Casa Comum - Rectory of the University of Porto hosted the presentation of the book Contrast III: Photography in Higher Education. The session, which included a round table, brought together lecturers, artists, students and interested members of the public to debate the multiple dimensions of the teaching and practice of photography in the university context. The event highlighted the transformative role of Contrast III for higher education in Portugal, emphasising the importance of interdisciplinarity, visual literacy and complementarity between different possible approaches to teaching photography in higher education. With its wide-ranging reflections and significant contributions, the book launch has paved the way for new dialogues and innovative practices in artistic and visual education.

Opening with Fátima Vieira
The Vice-Rector of U.Porto, Fátima Vieira, opened the session with a speech highlighting the importance of Contrast III as a milestone for the valorisation of photography teaching in higher education. The publication was highlighted as an essential record for preserving the pedagogical memory of photographic teaching in Portugal, while also underlining its role as a driving force for innovation and internationalisation.

He also emphasised that the work constitutes a space for integrative dialogue, connecting different disciplinary areas, such as architecture, design and the arts, and promoting collaboration between institutions and cultural agents. She concluded by emphasising the project's impact on valuing photography as a transformative practice and a tool for critical thinking.

After her speech, Fátima Vieira gave the floor to Pedro Leão Neto, the book's editorial coordinator.

Intertextuality, Interdisciplinarity and Complementarity
Pedro Leão Neto presented the main pillars of the Contrast project and centred his talk on intertextuality as one of the foundations of the Contrast project. Citing authors such as Jenny Laurent and Roland Barthes, he emphasised how photography can reinterpret contexts and works, generating new critical readings. He also emphasised the role of interdisciplinarity in Contrast, which crosses areas such as architecture, the arts and design to offer students enriching perspectives and diversified strategies for tackling common problems. This was followed by a speech by Joaquim Moreno, director of the MIArq programme at FAUP.

Joaquim Moreno, for his part, reinforced the need for curricular transformation in higher education, promoting greater flexibility and interdisciplinarity. He emphasised the importance of credit integration and interdisciplinary seminars as forces that can stimulate mobility between courses and expand the range of tools available to students.

Interdisciplinarity, but they brought to the debate a fundamental issue: the balance between the different layers of photography teaching
José Maças de Carvalho (DARQ-DEI) and Nuno Ramalho (ESAP) corroborated the importance of interdisciplinarity, but brought up a fundamental issue: the balance between the different layers of photography teaching. Both argued that teaching should complement both an authorial approach, which favours the artistic and creative dimension, and a technical and professional approach, which is essential for preparing students for the labour market.

Complementarity in Photography Teaching
Luís Ribeiro, representing ESMAD, emphasised the need to guarantee this balance between the different layers of photography teaching, stressing that in the case of ESMAD, which offers a bachelor's and master's degree in photography, it is essential that the two approaches coexist. Ribeiro argued that this complementarity enriches the students' training and responds to the contemporary demands of the photographic sector.

Public Participation: Photographic Literacy and Global Perspectives
The debate was also enriched by speeches from the audience, the first of which was Sofia Prata Morais (DARQ-DEI), who was even invited to take part in the round table and who, as the author of one of the published works, had the opportunity to explain her artistic project in greater detail, as well as mentioning the importance of the Contrast project and its publication for the visibility and exchange of authors, teachers and institutions. The second speaker was Estefânia R. de Almeida, head of Galeria Adorna. She pointed out the urgent need to encourage greater photographic literacy, not just in humanities and arts courses, but across the board in different areas of education, as is the case in many European countries and other parts of the world. He also emphasised the importance of integrating photography as a core subject, promoting visual and critical thinking.

A Publication with a Transformative Purpose
Contrast III brings together reflections and work from 11 higher education institutions, such as DARQ-DEI, DCAM-ECATI, EA.UCP, ESAP, ESMAD, FAUP, FBAUL, FBAUP, FEUP and IPT, setting out to explore innovative pedagogical strategies and to valorise photography as an interdisciplinary field. More than an editorial record, the book serves as a catalyst for critical debates on the teaching of photography, encouraging the integration of artistic, technical and theoretical practices.

The session ended with a wide-ranging debate in which teachers, students and artists shared their experiences, reinforcing the relevance of photography as a vehicle for interdisciplinary dialogue and cultural transformation.

The presentation of the book was the first round table in the CONTRAST project programme following the opening of the exhibition ‘Alterity, Absence and Origin’, which can be visited at the Portuguese Photography Centre until 27 April 2025.

No dia 11 de dezembro, a Casa Comum – Reitoria da Universidade do Porto foi palco da apresentação do livro Contrast III: A Fotografia no Ensino Superior. A sessão, que incluiu uma mesa-redonda, reuniu docentes, artistas, estudantes e público interessado para debater as múltiplas dimensões do ensino e da prática da fotografia no contexto universitário. O evento evidenciou o papel transformador do Contrast III para o ensino superior em Portugal, destacando a importância da interdisciplinaridade, da literacia visual e da complementaridade entre diversas abordagens possíveis no ensino da fotografia no superior. Com reflexões abrangentes e contributos significativos, o lançamento do livro abriu caminho para novos diálogos e práticas inovadoras no ensino artístico e visual.

A Vice-Reitora da U.Porto, Fátima Vieira, abriu a sessão com uma intervenção que realçou a importância do Contrast III como um marco para a valorização do ensino da fotografia no ensino superior. A publicação foi destacada como um registo essencial para preservar a memória pedagógica do ensino fotográfico em Portugal, sublinhando ainda o seu papel enquanto motor de inovação e internacionalização.

Ambos defenderam que o ensino deve contemplar, de forma complementar, tanto um enfoque autoral, que privilegie a dimensão artística e criativa, como uma abordagem técnica e profissional, essencial para preparar os estudantes para o mercado de trabalho.

Complementaridade no Ensino da Fotografia

Luís Ribeiro, em representação da ESMAD, reforçou a necessidade de garantir este equilíbrio entre as diferentes camadas do ensino da fotografia, salientando que, no caso da ESMAD, que oferece licenciatura e mestrado em fotografia, é essencial que as duas abordagens coexistam. Ribeiro defendeu que esta complementaridade enriquece a formação dos estudantes e responde às exigências contemporâneas do sector fotográfico.

Participação do Público: Literacia Fotográfica e Perspetivas Globais

O debate foi também enriquecido por intervenções do público, destacando-se, num primeiro momento, a intervenção de Sofia Prata Morais (DARQ-DEI) que foi inclusivamente convidada a participar na mesa redonda e que como autora de um dos trabalhos publicados teve oportunidade de explicar com maior pormenor o seu projeto artístico, bem como referir a importância do projeto Contrast e da sua publicação para a visibilidade e intercâmbio de autores, docentes e instituições. Num segundo momento, a intervenção de Estefânia R. de Almeida, responsável pela Galeria Adorna. Apontou a necessidade urgente de fomentar uma maior literacia fotográfica, não apenas nos cursos de humanidades e artes, mas de forma transversal em diferentes áreas de ensino, como acontece em muitos países europeus e noutras partes do mundo. Sublinhou ainda a importância de integrar a fotografia como disciplina central, promovendo o pensamento visual e crítico.

Uma Publicação com Propósito Transformador

O Contrast III reúne reflexões e trabalhos de 11 instituições de ensino superior, como a DARQ-DEI , DCAM-ECATI, EA.UCP, ESAP, ESMAD, FAUP, FBAUL, FBAUP, FEUP e IPT, propondo-se a explorar estratégias pedagógicas inovadoras e a valorizar a fotografia enquanto campo interdisciplinar. Mais do que um registo editorial, o livro serve como catalisador para debates críticos sobre o ensino da fotografia, incentivando a integração de práticas artísticas, técnicas e teóricas.

A sessão terminou com um debate alargado, onde docentes, estudantes e artistas partilharam as suas experiências, reforçando a relevância da fotografia como veículo de diálogo interdisciplinar e de transformação cultural.

The Casa Comum - U. Porto Rectory - will host the round table session and presentation of the book CONTRAST III: PHOTOGRAPHY IN HIGHER EDUCATION on 11 December at 6pm.

This will be the first round table in the CONTRAST project's programme following the opening of its exhibition Contrast - Alterity, Absence and Origin, on show at the Portuguese Photography Centre (CPF) until 27 April 2025.

The aim is to debate the role and importance of the teaching and practice of photography in Portuguese higher education schools of art, design, architecture and artistic studies, providing a deeper understanding of the world of photography.

In particular, the aim is to analyse different strategies for teaching photography, trying to understand how they can create bridges between the various disciplinary areas where photography is present, and also help to rethink what is real.

The event will be attended by Fátima Vieira, Vice-Rector of U. Porto (Culture, Museums and U.Porto Edições) who will make the presentation followed by a short speech by Joaquim Moreno (Director of MIArq FAUP) emphasising the opportunity of the publication and the place of photography in architecture education.

We will then enter the conversation period, which will be attended by Pedro Leão Neto (FAUP) and Olívia Marques da Silva (uniMAD/ESMAD /IPP), the book's editorial coordinators, as well as the Editors representing the ten educational institutions that are part of this book: DARQ, DCAM, EA.UCP, ESAP, ESMAD, FAUP, FBAUL, FBAUP, FEUP and IPT. The debate around the texts in the volume will be extended to colleagues from the participating institutions so that they can share their strategies for teaching photography and comment on the students' work. ABOUT THE PROJECT

The CONTRAST project has the consolidated experience of ten higher education schools teaching photography in various disciplinary and artistic areas: ARCO, DARQ, DCAM, EA.UCP, ESAP, ESMAD, FAUP, FBAUL, FBAUP and IPT. Through various projects, research and initiatives, as well as Cityscopio's editorial experience, it ensures a strong integrated and complementary strategy for teaching, research and communication on photography, namely through the organisation of conferences, debates, exhibitions, projects, courses/workshops and book publications that expand photography to other disciplinary areas.

The project was selected for funding in the DGARTES competition to support creative and publishing projects.

A Casa Comum – Reitoria U. Porto – vai receber, no próximo dia 11 de Dezembro, pelas 18h00, a sessão de mesa redonda e apresentação do livro CONTRAST III: A FOTOGRAFIA NO ENSINO SUPERIOR. 

Esta será a primeira mesa redonda da programação do projeto CONTRAST após a inauguração da sua Exposição Contrast – Alteridade, Ausência e Origem, em exibição no Centro Português de Fotografia (CPF) até 27 de abril de 2025.

O projeto CONTRAST conta com a experiência consolidada de dez escolas do ensino superior a lecionar fotografia em diversas áreas disciplinares e artísticas: ARCO, DARQ, DCAM, EA.UCP, ESAP, ESMAD, FAUP, FBAUL, FBAUP e IPT. Através de diversos projetos, investigação e iniciativas, bem como da experiência editorial da Cityscopio, assegura uma forte estratégia integrada e complementar de ensino, investigação e comunicação sobre fotografia, nomeadamente através da organização de conferências, debates, exposições, projetos, cursos /workshops e publicações em livro que expandem a fotografia a outras áreas disciplinares. 

O projeto foi seleccionado para financiamento no concurso de apoio a projectos criação e edição da DGARTES. 

COORDENAÇÃO 

O projeto tem uma coordenação conjunta em parceria com a Associação Cultural Cityscopio, a ESMAD-uniMAD e a FBAUP – i2ADS, sendo liderada pela FAUP através do grupo de investigação Arquitetura, Arte e Imagem (AAI) integrado do Centro de Estudo de Arquitetura e Urbanismo (CEAU).
