5TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
VISUAL SPACES OF CHANGE: UNVEILING THE PUBLICNESS
OF URBAN SPACE

The 5th International Conference ON THE SURFACE Photography on Architecture took place on the past 31st of May at MAAT (Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology) .

The program of the conference consisted of three round tables in which photography was explored as a significant instrument of research to build innovative and critical visions on architecture as a broad field of knowledge operating within larger systems, with cultural, artistic, technical and historical dimensions. The main focus of the 5th edition of On The Surface was to question how different dimensions of the public sphere can be significantly understood or refracted through different lenses and perspectives. At the heart of this debate was the contemporary discussion that the city's image is itself modified within the actual process of change according to specific sensory and cognitive conditions, influencing the readability of public space and the imagination of the public sphere. At this conference these and other interrelations were debated and explored to infer how they can establish new spatial connections in expanded territories of cosmopolitan interaction. Within this broader discussion, each roundtable addressed the following issues, among other issues posed by invited authors.

Also, during the Conference, all participants were given the opportunity to visit the exhibition “Fiction and Fabrication: Photography of Architecture After the Digital Turn”, on display at MAAT until the 19th of August 2019. This exhibition is curated by Pedro Gadanho (who gave a guided tour of the exbition) and Sérgio Fazenda Rodrigues.

Irá inaugurar a exposição Ficção e Fabricação. Fotografia de Arquitetura após a Revolução Digital no dia 19 de Março de 2019 no MAAT, em Lisboa.

O Museu de Arte, Arquitetura e Tecnologia e a Coleção de Fotografia Contemporânea do NOVO BANCO, têm o prazer de o(a) convidar para a inauguração da exposição Ficção e Fabricação: Fotografia de Arquitetura Após a Revolução Digital, no dia 19 de março, entre as 19h e as 21h, no edifício do MAAT.

Ficção e Fabricação reúne quase 50 artistas que constroem e manipulam imagens feitas a partir de objetos e espaços arquitetónicos. Assinalando os 30 anos da invenção do Photoshop e da invasão das ferramentas digitais na produção fotográfica, esta mostra foca o imaginário da arquitetura como tema fulcral de uma prática expandida da fotografia na arte contemporânea. Desde as obras seminais de Andreas Gurski, Thomas Ruff, Jeff Wall ou Thomas Demand até às criações ficcionais de Beate Gütschow, Oliver Boberg ou Isabel Brison, delineia-se um panorama da fotografia de arquitetura que contorna abordagens objetivas e privilegia as efabulações sobre o real entre o olhar cinematográfico, a desconstrução da imagem ou as narrativas mais politizadas. Numa era em que os meios digitais dominam a fabricação de imagens arquitetónicas para consumo mediático, as ficções provenientes do campo artístico surgem aqui como uma alternativa crítica que interroga e amplia a conceção da arquitetura.

A exposição conta com a curadoria de Pedro Gadanho e Sérgio Fazenda Rodrigues e pode ser visitada na Galeria Principal do MAAT das 11h às 19h até dia 19 de Agosto de 2019.

5ª edição da conferência no MAAT

Dia 31 de maio, a 5ª edição da conferência ON THE SURFACE irá acontecer por ocasião da exposição do MAAT Ficção e Fabricação, sob o tema “Visual Spaces of Change: Unveiling the Publicness of Urban Space” - com foco nas transformações contemporâneas do espaço público. Esta edição propõe debater e explorar o potencial da Fotografia como instrumento significativo para investigar, refletir e tornar visível a emergência de novas experiências coletivas no espaço social.

Até dia 28 de fevereiro, encontra-se aberta a Call for Papers a ser apresentada nesta 5ª edição da conferência ON THE SURFACE: Photography On Architecture e será dirigida às questões propostas para os três painéis.

Pretende-se com esta chamada obter uma colecção significativa de diversos textos e narrativas visuais, permitindo uma reflexão rica sob que formas a fotografia e a imagem podem ser usadas para se melhor compreender um conjunto de problemáticas à volta da temática da transformação do espaço público. Uma série de abstracts / papers será selecionada para apresentação oral e sessão de posters.
