ARCHITECTURE, ART AND IMAGE - UTOPIA

In result of the colaboration between two projects related to the universes of Architecture, Art and Image and Utopia, a publication AAI - UTOPIA 500 is born with the coordination of the teacher and coordinator of the AAI research group integrated in the Center for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism (CEAU | FAUP) Pedro Leão Neto and Fátima Vieira, Coordinator of Porto’s hub and CETAPS – Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies of the Faculdade de Letras da Universidade do Porto (CETAPS | FLUP), financed by FCT. The publication has the support and the seal of U.Porto Press, that associates with scopio Editions to reinforce the required research for these projects, as well as several activities that gravitate around it – exhibitions, contests, conferences and debates. The AAI Project belongs to the Architecture, Art and Image (AAI) research group, that stems from CEAU, having as general goals, on the one hand, to promote a comprehension of the image and its use as a method and medium of representation, of understanding and interaction with several spaces in the fields of Architecture, City and Territory; on the other hand, showcase the advantages of the exploration of the image as a medium capable of crossing borders and shifting boundaries between different issues and disciplinary fields of Architecture and Art, encouraging the formation of multidisciplinary teams. We intend to incentive a critical and poetic gaze about the spaces and ways of living that characterize and identify, revealing facets that were once invisible or forgotten, as well as offering a prospetic and utopian vision about those spaces.

The Utopia 500 project began in June 2015, and its rst enterprise was to organise the celebration of the 500 years of Thomas More’s Utopia. Currently, Utopia 500 is actively committed to raising awareness of the notion of Utopia as a potential driver for social change and a source of inspiration for innovation in all study areas – with a tangible impact on society. The project is managed by CETAPS (the Universityof Porto and the Nova University of Lisbon) and has welcomed more than 100 trainees from different cultures, different study elds and different research elds, from all around the world. The project promotes collaborative and interdisciplinary work skills in all those involved, promotes the creation of international networks and celebrates the human capacity toact and nd solutions to meet the Sustainable Development Goals set by the United Nations (2030 Agenda). Utopia 500 has organized several activities, particularly in collaboration with the Municipality of Valongo and the Valongo School District, within the framework of the university extension project Valongo, Utopian City. In 2019, Utopia’s team organised the Festival Repara em Valongo (Repair your goods in Valongo) to promote the principles of the circular economy, and in 2020, the team is organising the Collective Imagination Festival, in collaboration with the Municipality of Valongo.

In this context of research, conferences and debates, surfaces the international Drawing and Photography Architecture, Art and Image – UTOPIA 500 directed to the Space and Identity of the Universities, and it is open to the entire academic community.
The core theme of the contest is the idea of Utopia and Visual Spaces of Change (VSC), with a focus on University spaces and identities. The second edition will have the participation of the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC) and the Chalmers University of Technology (CUT), which will join the contest through the international network for research development and dissemination, AAI, in articulation with the project Visual Spaces of Change (VSC). The contest is coordinated by the Centre for Studies in Architecture and Urbanism of U.Porto’s Faculty of Architecture (CEAU/FAUP), through the AAI Research Group, and by the Centre for English, Translation and Anglo-Portuguese Studies of U.Porto’s Faculty of Arts and Humanities (CETAPS/FLUP), through the university extension project Utopia500.
